Pasture Talk
*Nappier/Bana grass*
Also known as Elephant grass, Bana grass is definitely the King of all pastures with a yield potential of 20 to 80 tonnes per hectare. Bana provides the Highest yield among all pasture seeds.
It makes life easy for those farmers with non arable lands like swarmps where it thrives very well. Bana grass can also be planted along river banks where it will serve as a dual purpose crop protecting the river from siltation and providing a continuous fresh supply of green fodder for your Animals. It is definitely a must have for Dairy farmers.

*Planting*
Land should be disced, and free from clods, to ensure a fine tilth seedbed, or a non selective herbicide can be applied prior to planting and then planted after 7 days. Furrows 1m apart and 15cm deep should be prepared, the cuttings should be buried 2 to three node, at an angle of 15 to 30°, growing tip facing the right way up, the cuttings should be spaced 50cm within the row.

*Yield*
Depending on Crop management Bana grass should be ready from 3 to 4 months after planting. Total yield per year is 20 to 80 tonnes per hectare, from 2 to 3cuts.

*Feeding*
Bana can be bailed, made into silage or grazed depending on farmers circumstances. It can be fed to Cattle, Horses, Goats, Sheep, and Rabbits.
