We seek to fill a vacant post of RESEARCH AGRONOMIST in the Department of Agronomy.
Duties And Responsibilities
The Agronomist will establish, in consultation with the Director of the Experiment Station, innovative and scientific research programs designed to develop the best agronomic methods to increase the production, quality, and guaranteed income from growing sugarcane while ensuring sustainable use of land and the environment. Investigate problems of field-sugarcane crops and develop new methods of growing cane at specific locations/soils to secure efficient production, higher yields and improved quality; study sugarcane production systems to discern the best ways of planting, harvesting, cultivating, and rotating crops.
Additional duties include technology transfer in the form of on- and off-Station demonstrations, training, extension, and presentations during sugarcane Seminars, Field Days, and Sugarcane Road Shows. Respond to enquiries from cane growers, agronomists, agricultural engineers and plant protectionists at the estates and other professionals at the ZSAES. Manage, supervise and train technical and research support staff in their expert areas at the Station and in Agronomy. Establish effective and harmonious work relationships with colleagues at the ZSAES. Establish and maintain relationships with stakeholders and other professionals at the ZSAES and within the sugarcane industry and the region to promote continual exchange of information and ideas on fostering growth of the sugarcane industry. Do other duties that may be assigned by the Director and/or the Board of Z.S.A.E.S.

Qualifications And Experience
Qualifications /Skills and Experience
A minimum of a Master's degree in Crop Agronomy or Plant/ Crop Physiology or Applied Plant Science or Soil Fertility plus at least five years of relevant working experience in at least three of the above Key Performance Areas at a research environment is a must. The Bachelor's degree must have been in Crop Agronomy or Plant Science/Crop Science or Soil Science or Agriculture. A Doctoral degree in Agronomy or Soil Fertility or Plant Physiology is an added advantage. Other attributes include: know-how of related scientific methods; possess sharp reasoning and logical skills; have good mathematical skills and computer literacy; a good listener and interpreter; ability to manage deadlines effectively; ability to lead cross functional teams in a timeline driven environment; able to plan, organize work, and supervise support staff; integrity, resourcefulness, initiative, maturity and good judgment, tact, and a clean drivers license.
