Childline Zimbabwe was started by a local branch of an international service organisation, the Soroptimists, who wished to give children, across the country a free, confidential and child friendly crisis line to call when they need help. Childline Zimbabwe counsels children over the telephone, via a free postal service and face-to-face at our drop-in centres in the country 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year. This is a unique service in Zimbabwe and without this facility children who have been abused, exploited and abandoned would be left even more vulnerable to suffering further harm.
Childline is a most professional organisation run by a board of trustees and a few very dedicated individuals. There is currently a centre in Harare and one in Bulawayo.
The centres are staffed by volunteers in addition to trained personnel and have a very child friendly atmosphere. Unfortunately there is a need for this type of service in our country and future plans include outreach programmes and more branches countrywide as public awareness is vital to help children in this situation. Here in Zimbabwe Childline is locally supported, mostly by donations and local fundraising events.
